Maria Cristina’s artwork is witty, humorous, and heartwarming as described by a following that is rapidly expanding beyond Las Cruces, New Mexico, her present home town. Her works have found homes in Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, and the East Coast of the United States.

Although Maria Cristina is also gaining recognition as a folk artist who paints with various media to create retablos and embellished crosses, she is best known for her free hand drawings in MS Word™, an unusual medium for graphic artists. Self-taught, the artist uses a mouse to create her images, relying only on the simple tools offered by MS Word™. She produces artist prints of her drawings in her own home studio, using archival quality paper and dyes to ensure fine and enduring quality. For inspiration, she falls back on her travels, life experiences, encounters with diverse cultures, deep religious faith, and a vivid imagination. She holds a doctorate in Education from the University of Washington (1996, Seattle, WA).

“I draw to connect with other people,” she says. “I have customers who requested drawings that captured certain memories for them. Sometimes these memories are funny, sometimes poignant.”

Maria Cristina sells her artwork in the Las Cruces Farmers and Crafts Market every Wednesday and Saturday and the Mesilla Mercado each Thursday, and she maintains a studio in Historic Mesilla in New Mexico.
